Biographical history
Jake MacDonald was born in Winnipeg in 1949 and received his B.A. in English from the University of Manitoba in 1971. He supported himself as a carpenter and fishing guide for several years before embarking on a career as a writer that spans more than three decades. He is the author of eight critically acclaimed books, both fictional and non-fictional. He has written several hundred articles and received many awards for his work. MacDonald was the recipient of the Greg Clark Award for best outdoor article in Canada in 1990. He was awarded the National Magazine Award for journalism in 1996 and won the same award for travel writing four years later. His 2002 book <i>Houseboat Chronicles</i> won three awards including the prestigious Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction.
Custodial history
The fonds was donated to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Jake MacDonald in accessions in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
Scope and content
The fonds includes biographical and family material; published and unpublished manuscripts; digital and print copies of MacDonald's books, poems, short stories, articles, and screenplays; correspondence; day planners; notebooks; photographs; discs; and tapes. The photograph collection consists of 26 photographs, 3 contact sheets, and 12 CDs of digital photographs. The tape collection consists of 2 compact discs and 4 audio cassettes. The electronic collection consists of 77 3.5" floppy disks and two CD-RWs. In addition, three medals received by MacDonald--the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, and a medal commemorating the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour--and a cork from his 40th birthday are included in the collection.
