Leon Edel was an author of many books and biographer of Henry James. He lived in New York, but vacationed and resided for parts of the year in Hawaii and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. He maintained close contact with his cousin Helen Promislow, who lived in Winnipeg, through letters and a few visits. Edel was married twice; his first wife passed away from cancer quite a few years after their separation.
